|Bamber Bridge v LR||HT 0 - 0||FT 6 - 0|
Atherton's first ever match in the Northern Premier League was against the club who had taken their place the previous season when LR had finished top of the North West Counties League and Bamber Bridge second, but Crilly Park had failed the grading requirements for the Northern Premier League. Although manager Dave Morris intended letting his successful team from last season prove themselves at the higher level, some players weren't available so the team featured new signings Paul Horridge, Ian Lloyd from Ashton United and Brian Livesey from Bacup Borough. The first half saw Atherton have much of the play, but unable to turn their chances into goals. At half time the score remained goalless. With half an hour of the game remaining it was still 0 - 0, but Bamber Bridge were starting to get control of the game and once they opened the scoring, that was it. Ian Pilkington (2), Paul Allen (2 including one penalty), John Thomas and David Eaves scored for Bamber Bridge.

|Yorkshire Amateurs v LR||HT 0 - 0||FT 0 - 1|
Atherton made hard work of this FA
Cup match against their opponents from the Northern Counties East League,
seemingly nervous in the first half, making silly mistakes which against better
opposition would have led to goals. However, they escaped due to the lack of
experience in their hosts.
The second half saw Atherton play better and score the winning goal in the 55th minute. Keith Ingham put in a great cross from the left and Paul Burrows was there to put the ball in from 12 yards out. Yorkshire Amateurs battled hard to get back into the game and it was with some relief that Atherton heard the final whistle blow.
