|Barrow v LR||HT 0 - 1||FT 2 - 2|
A great performance by Atherton in the League Cup against Premier Division opposition. Mark Stewart and Dave Liptrott gave LR a 2-0 lead, but then Barrow were awarded a penalty, which baffled everyone. Play had continued without any claims from the home side. With the penalty scored and a last minute equaliser, the game ended all square. Andy Hills was so incensed with the referees decision to give a penalty that he had words with the ref after the whistle and was red carded.

|LR v Workington||HT 1 - 0||FT 6 - 1|
Workington had the better of the first half, pressuring the Laburnums goal, but were unable to take advantage of the chances they created, including no less than ten corners. They were dominating the game until the 30th minute when Atherton broke away through Paul Moss who found Dave Liptrott. His shot was parried by the keeper, but Kenny Quigg was on hand to put the ball in.Minutes into the second half Workington's Glen Liddle was sent off for a second bookable offence and that signalled the end of Workington's challenge. Atherton began to dominate the midfield and in the 65th minute Dave Liptrott took advantage of a goalkeeping error to put Laburnums 2-0 up. Two minutes later Workington's top striker, Martin Henderson who had missed a number of first half chances, scored to bring Workington back into the game. A few minutes later Atherton were awarded a penalty, but Paul Burrows failed to find the net as the keeper made a good save. However, in the 75th minute Dave Liptrott cut across the defence and scored his second. The game had barely restarted when another goalkeeping error presented Paul Moss with an easy scoring chance. With Moss and Liptrott adding another goal each in the 83rd and 88th minutes, Liptrott had secured his hat-trick and Atherton had a comfortable win. Despite a couple of slips in the second half, Workington's keeper Kevin Wolfe was awarded their man of the match for keeping the scoreline down.

|LR v Harrogate Town||HT 0 - 0||FT 0 - 0|
Atherton almost totally dominated this game, but wasted chance after chance. Dave Liptrott hit the post and saw several attempts go wide, as did Andy Feeley and Tony Pemberton. Mark Stewart was giving the Harrogate defence a torrid time, but his hard work and crosses into the area were wasted as no-one could find the killer touch. At one point in the second half, Harrogate had every player in their own area to defend their goal. No matter what Atherton tried, they couldn't score. It didn't help when Paul Kirwan was sent off for his second bookable offence. The fourth game in a row that LR had had a player sent off.
