Photos from Atherton LR v Eagley

A few weeks ago we called this referee for forcing us to play on a waterlogged pitch, but to redress the balance, he had a good game this time. There were no assistant referees so the match official had to co-opt a couple of people who had just gone along to watch the game into helping him out. And while accepting that we're never always going to agree with the decisions at times, under the circumstances, he did an excellent job. One of the helpers was Hospital Cup committee man Andy Whittle (pictured right). I have no idea who the other gentleman was and if someone would like to tell me I will give him credit.

The story of the first half was LR pressing forwards and passing the ball around, but not getting many clear chances while Eagley hit effectively on the break. After 15 minutes, LR were caught by a through ball which Rob FIndlow chased and hit over the outcoming keeper and in. Celebrations can be seen in photos above. However, 20 minutes later River Humphreys cut in from the right and hit a good shot from just inside the area, across the goal and in at the far post. LR added to their total when a left sided cross was headed in my Matt Eckersley.

The goal which confirmed LR's place in the semi-final came midway through the second half when Chris Quirk broke through and as Andy Leece in the Eagley goal came rushing out, Quirk lifted the ball over him and into the net. A similar thing happened minutes later, but this time Quirks lob came of the bar. LR created a few more chances, but couldn't find the fourth. As the game wore on, LR's Chris Brinksman made a couple of fine saves while Eagley's Clint McLoughlin and Carl Grimshaw both came close. Eagley worked hard to rescue the game, but the LR defence worked to keep them out and Brinksman was on fine form if they did get a shot in.

No doubting Eagley's work-rate and effort throughout the game and had they taken some of the chances they made, it could have been a different story.
