There was little argument from anyone at the end
of this game that Ramsbottom had deserved their third consecutive victory in
the Hospital Cup. Stoneclough seemed to lack that extra bite they had shown
in earlier rounds. Ramsbottom generally had the better of the first half, having much of the possession but a solid Stoneclough defence kept them at bay. The back four dealt with everything Ramsbottom could throw at them and although Rammy won a few corners, anything that did get through, keeper Craig Tebay dealt with. The closest the Rams came were from a few long range shots. At the other end Ramsbottom's stand-in keeper, Andrew Moores, had to keep alert but wasn't seriously tested by the normally strong front line from the West Lancs League side as the Ramsbottom defence looked strong. Stoneclough started the second half in determined mood and took the lead just over 10 minutes in. The ball was worked down the left side before being crossed into the area, where it was half cleared as far as Liam Ralph just outside the area. Ralph lifted the ball over a crowded area and it dropped over Moores and into the net. Ramsbottom came close to equalising a few times and when Andy Sensale headed the ball over Tebay, giving him a free shot into an empty net, only for a defender to charge back and hoof the ball off his toe, it seemed maybe it wouldn't be their night. However, the resulting corner was sent to the far post where Jamie Lester headed it back and Sensale got the touch to level the game. Another Sensale shot deflected off a defender and came back off the bar before being headed over as Ramsbottom piled on the pressure. The winning goal came when an attempted back header to the keeper lacked the necessary power and Sensale nipped in, collected the ball and hit it past the stranded keeper. Stoneclough tried to rescue the game, but the fitness of the NWCL side seemed to tell and time ran out. The game was played in the right spirit and players from both sides were quick to praise their opponents after the game. So another well organised competition came to an end. Seven games, 28 goals from open play and 15 penalties. Every game was played in good spirit with a friendly welcome at every club. This is what football should be like. |
