Photos from Ramsbottom United v Turton

Ramsbottom progressed to their third consecutive final after a hard fought battle against Turton. The West Lancs side had the better start and a glorious chance in the second minute came back off the crossbar. A goalless first half saw Ramsbottom attack but fail to test the Turton keeper. High crosses were sent into the area despite the Turton defenders being much taller than the Ramsbottom forwards so naturally all were cleared. Turton looked the more likely of the two sides to score, but as in the game against Bolton County, they just lacked that extra something at the front and chances went high or wide.

Ramsbottom had the better of the second half, in terms of possession, with much of the game being played in Turton's half of the pitch, but the Turton defence worked hard and denied the Rams any clear scoring opportunities. Neither keeper was seriously tested, although despite all their possession it was the Ramsbottom keeper who had more to do as when Turton broke free they caused problems for the Ramsbottom defence. Turton saw another header crash off the bar while at the other end a looping shot bounced off the top of the Turton crossbar. With both sides working hard but lacking at the front, the game ended goalless.

As it was still reasonably light, the referee decided to try five minutes each way of extra time to see if the game could be won without the need of penalties. The first five minutes passed without incident, while the second saw a similar pattern to the second half, Ramsbottom having most of the possession but Turton getting the better chances. Right at the end, Ramsbottoms keeper made a brave save at the feet of a Turton forward.

With no score the game went to penalties. Both sides scored their first three, but then Turton's fourth was saved. Ramsbottom scored to go 4-3 up. Turtons scored their final spot kick as did Ramsbottom, to win 5-4 on penalties.
