It was easy to feel sympathy for both sides in
this game. Turton probably deserved to go through after dominating the
second half, but Bolton County worked hard to keep them out and only saw
their efforts undone three minutes from time. The first half saw Turton passing the ball round well and building numerous attacks, but rarely testing the visiting keeper. Bolton County got forwards quickly on the break and looked more lively at the front. County took the lead after around 20 minutes when a free kick half way inside Turton's half was blocked, but Ged McGreary was first to react and hit home. Turton levelled about ten minutes later through Neil Johnson. While I'm sure he'll claim it was deliberate, what is commonly known as a "cross-cum-shot" from outside the County area on the right side, dropped over the keeper and into the far corner. County went in 2-1 up at the break after another free kick for the visitors on the right side was turned in by Michael Locke at the far post. The second half was almost entirely played in County's half as Turton built attack after attack, but all were dealt with. County's keeper made three excellent saves, a few shots were hit high or wide and the defence worked hard to deny Turton. County rarely ventured into Turton's half, but when they did they soon lost possession allowing the home side to build again. It seemed Turton's efforts would be in vain until three minutes from time when the ball was crossed in from the left and Paul Bridge headed home. Both sides came close in a frantic last few minutes but time ran out and as darkness descended, the game went to penalties. Bolton County saw their first two penalties saved, while Turton scored both of theirs. Both teams scored the next two, which meant Turton went through 4-2 on penalties. |
